The last step before real engine mods must be done. Take advantage of your bigger displacement motor with this exceptional performing cam. For large displacement motors with 9.5:1 to 10.5:1 compression ratios. 3500-6000.

WSW only recommends this cam for Big Dog motors with the larger valves and G carburetor. If you have the smaller valves, later EPA motors primarily, and an E carb and do not want to do engine modifications WSW recommends the 585 cam.

Note: This cam will reduce your lower end power band, on stock Big Dogs, due to the low, roughtly 9.6:1, compression ratio and the stock locked Ignition Module in the Big Dogs. To really get the most out of this cam WSW recommends raising your compression a minimum of half a point and installing the Thunderheart Programmable Ignition Module. If you want to get the most from your motor without doing major engine mods go with the 585 cam and the Thunderheart Programmable Ignition Module.

Installing a new cam requires the following procedure, in addition to other things of course, but this is an important step for doing it correctly.
You will need to verify that the cam has no more than .005" to .015" of endplay. Start by installing the cam, lock washer and thrust washer. Put the cam cover and a new gasket on and tighten the hardware to 120 in-lbs of torque.
Slide a feeler gauge in through the lifter bore and measure the endplay in four different locations.
There are many different size thrust washers to help you achieve the proper end play. We have found in most cases that going from the OEM cam to a larger S&S cam requires a.075 or a .08 shim. Once you have the end play figured out then you break it back down again and install another new cam gasket and complete the installation. So in general you will need 2 new cam cover gaskets and the correct shim for the end play. Failure to do the above can lead to excessive side to side play and damage to your motor.
